Nepal’s Prime Minister K. P. Sharma Oli has resigned. After two consecutive days of protests, he stepped down from the post of Prime Minister.

On Tuesday (September 9), this information was reported by the British news outlet BBC.

According to the report, Oli’s secretariat confirmed his resignation in a statement.

In his statement, K. P. Sharma Oli said he resigned to pave the way for a constitutional solution to the ongoing crisis.

Earlier on Tuesday morning, protests continued across Nepal, including the capital Kathmandu. During that time, angry crowds attacked and vandalized the residences of several influential leaders. The homes of Oli himself and former Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba also came under attack. Political party offices were also targeted.

Mohan Regmi, Executive Director of Civil Service Hospital, told the BBC that at least two people were killed in Tuesday’s protests, while another 90 are undergoing treatment in the hospital.

Before his resignation, Prime Minister Oli had called for an all-party meeting to resolve the crisis, following a nationwide escalation of tension sparked by a crackdown on youth-led demonstrations by security forces.

In a statement released prior to his resignation, Oli said the meeting would be held at 6 p.m., though the venue was not disclosed. He stated that dialogue is the only way to resolve the crisis.

He further said, “The protests in the capital and across the country on Monday, and the subsequent incidents, have saddened me. Violence of any kind is not good for the nation’s interest. What is needed now is a peaceful, dialogue-based solution.”
