Washington, Sept 8 – The European Union’s top sanctions envoy arrived in Washington with a team of experts on Sunday to discuss what could become the first jointly coordinated US-EU sanctions on Russia since President Donald Trump’s return to the White House.
The high-level talks come as Moscow continues to bombard Ukrainian cities, more than three weeks after Mr. Trump met Russian President Vladimir Putin at a summit in Alaska.
European leaders are pressing Washington to take concrete steps, hopeful that the US president is now prepared to deliver on repeated threats of tougher action. On Saturday, following the war’s largest air assault to date that set ablaze government buildings in Kyiv, Mr. Trump declared he was “ready to move to a second phase of restrictions,” his strongest indication yet that new sanctions could soon be unveiled.
