Carlos Alcaraz captured the 2025 US Open crown with a four-set win over Jannik Sinner, extending their gripping rivalry at the top of men’s tennis.
The Spaniard struck early, held off a spirited second-set comeback from the Italian, and closed out a 6-2, 3-6, 6-1, 6-4 victory in New York.
The final began half an hour late because of additional security checks introduced for U.S. President Donald Trump’s visit to Flushing Meadows.
Once underway, the two young stars produced another high-intensity contest, though not quite at the same level as their French Open and Wimbledon showdowns earlier this year.
Alcaraz’s serving—an area that had faltered against Sinner at Wimbledon—was rock solid. That edge helped him reclaim the title he first lifted in 2022 and brought his career Grand Slam tally to six. At 22, he is now the second-youngest man after Bjorn Borg to reach that milestone.
The victory also evens out the year’s major titles: Alcaraz with the French Open and US Open, Sinner with the Australian Open and Wimbledon.
Facing Sinner in a fifth final this season, Alcaraz joked: “I see you more than my family. It’s always special to share the court with you.”
The win also returns him to world number one, ending Sinner’s 65-week reign at the top.
Sinner saved two championship points but could not deny Alcaraz on a third, which he sealed with a 131mph ace. His trademark golf-swing celebration followed as the Arthur Ashe crowd erupted.
“I gave everything today but Carlos was too strong,” admitted Sinner, who appeared below his best after battling an abdominal issue earlier in the tournament.
