Iran Executes Man Tied to Women’s Rights Protests

The protests erupted in September 2022 after 22-year-old Mahsa Amini died in police custody, days after she was detained by morality police for allegedly violating Iran’s mandatory hijab rules. Authorities claimed she died of a heart attack, but reports of severe injuries fueled anger nationwide under the slogan “Women, Life, Freedom.”

Tehran, Sept 6, 2025 – Iran has executed a man accused of involvement in the killing of a security officer during protests sparked by the death of Mahsa Amini, state and rights groups said on Saturday.

The judiciary’s Mizan news agency reported that protester Mehran Bahramian opened fire on police vehicles in December 2022 in the Semirom district of Isfahan province, killing officer Mohsin Rezai and wounding several others. His death sentence was carried out on September 6.

Rights groups have questioned the trial’s integrity, alleging authorities obtained confessions through torture. Amnesty International said Iranian police forced Bahramian to confess by beatings and threats against his relatives, later presenting the coerced statements in court.

Since then, Iran has executed 10 people linked to the protests, according to rights monitors. Bahramian’s brother Fazel has also been sentenced to death, while another brother, Morad, was killed by police during the unrest, rights groups said.
