Washington, Sept. 4 — Former President Joe Biden recently underwent Mohs surgery to treat skin cancer, his spokeswoman confirmed Thursday.
She did not provide further details, but Biden was seen in recent days with a wound on the right side of his head in photos and videos published by Inside Edition and the New York Post.
Mohs surgery is a precise procedure in which doctors remove thin layers of skin and examine them under a microscope until no cancer cells remain. The method is considered the most effective treatment for basal cell carcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma, the two most common forms of skin cancer, according to the Skin Cancer Foundation.
In 2023, Biden had a small lesion removed from his chest that was later confirmed to be basal cell carcinoma. At the time, the White House physician said all cancerous tissue had been successfully excised.
Earlier this year, Biden’s office also disclosed that he had been diagnosed with an aggressive form of prostate cancer that had spread to his bones.
