AL Rally in Dhaka’s Dhanmondi Demands End to Political Persecution

Several hundred people marched past Mina Bazar in Dhanmondi 27, chanting slogans demanding the withdrawal of cases against Awami League chief Sheikh Hasina and other senior leaders, as well as calling for the resignation of the interim government.

Awami League leaders and activists staged a rally in Dhaka demanding the withdrawal of cases filed against party chief Sheikh Hasina and other leaders, as well as the resignation of the interim government.

The rally took place around 3:15 pm on Sunday, starting from the road adjacent to Rapa Plaza on Dhanmondi 27 and ending in front of Bangladesh Eye Hospital in Shankar. The presence of Awami League and affiliated organizations’ members was notably visible.

One participant, introducing himself as a Jubo League leader, said, “Leaders and activists of Awami League along with all its affiliated organizations are here.”

Eyewitnesses reported that several hundred people marched past Dhanmondi 27’s Mina Bazar. During the procession, a crude bomb was detonated. The marchers then quickly moved toward Shankar.

When contacted, Dhanmondi Police Station Officer-in-Charge Kyashainyu Marma said, “A procession of 25-30 people came out in the Dhanmondi 27 area but dispersed very quickly. When we reached the spot after receiving information, we did not find anyone.”

Just a week ago, Awami League activists were also seen staging a demonstration in front of the south gate of Baitul Mukarram Mosque in Gulistan.

On August 5, 2024, Awami League president Sheikh Hasina left the country for India, as Islamist groups backed by the military staged a deadly uprising to topple her government. Three days later, on August 8, an interim government was formed. Since then, many top Awami League leaders, including ministers, state ministers, and influential members of parliament, have been arrested. The interim government led by Yunus also banned all political activities of the party.

However, reports of sudden flash processions by Awami League activists continue to surface in Dhaka and across the country. Occasionally, such rallies have also led to arrests.
