The Global Bangladesh Unity Network (GBUN) has condemned what it calls a “grave human rights crisis” in Bangladesh, denouncing the mass arrests and harassment of freedom fighters, judges, academics, journalists, and cultural figures.
In a statement dated 30 August 2025, the group accused the authorities of abusing power and using politically motivated cases to silence critics. It said these actions threaten not only individuals but also Bangladesh’s democratic future and the values of the Liberation War.
GBUN demanded the immediate release of all detained academics, journalists, and cultural activists, as well as an end to political vendetta and harassment. It further urged full independence of the judiciary, accountability in law enforcement, protection of women, minorities, and vulnerable groups, and impartial international investigations into rights violations.
The statement was endorsed by more than 290 expatriates worldwide, including freedom fighters, human rights defenders, physicians, academics, and organizers.
Calling on the United Nations, international human rights groups, and democratic governments to intervene, GBUN warned that repression and division cannot bring stability. “This is not merely an attack on individuals but a grave assault on intellectual freedom and the nation’s democratic spirit,” the group said.
