Dhaka, August 29, 2025 – In what critics describe as the latest blow to freedom of expression in Bangladesh, veteran freedom fighter and former minister Latif Siddique has been arrested alongside Professor Hafizur Rahman Karzon, Journalist Manjurul Alam Panna and 12 others. Authorities confirmed that preparations are underway to file cases against them under the Anti-Terrorism Act.
The arrests came after a violent attack broke out at the Dhaka Reporters Unity, where Siddique was scheduled to hold a press conference. Witnesses said a mob stormed the venue, attacking Siddique and his associates before police intervened. Instead of detaining the attackers, law enforcement took Siddique and his colleagues into custody.
Rights groups and journalists have strongly condemned the move, calling it a direct assault on freedom of speech. “Latif Siddique fought for the country’s independence. To see him branded as a terrorist for speaking at a press conference is outrageous,” said one senior journalist present at the scene.
Legal experts warn that the use of the Anti-Terrorism Act in such cases is an alarming escalation, potentially silencing dissent and criminalizing peaceful expression. Civil society organizations have demanded the immediate release of all detainees and an impartial investigation into the mob attack.
The incident adds to growing concerns about shrinking space for opposition voices and press freedom in Bangladesh.
