Washington, D.C. — August 25, 2025 — The White House announced Monday that President Donald J. Trump is taking aggressive action to roll back “cashless bail” systems nationwide, calling the reform a failed experiment that has fueled violent crime in major cities.
In a statement, the administration described cashless bail as “The Radical Left’s fantasy” that has transformed city streets into “hunting grounds for repeat criminals who mock our justice system.”
The White House cited a series of high-profile cases to illustrate the dangers of releasing defendants without monetary bail. Among them:
In New York, a man with dozens of prior arrests was released without bail in 2022 after smearing feces on a woman in a subway station. Months later, he was rearrested for another violent crime.
Also in New York, a domestic violence suspect freed without bail in 2022 fatally shot his wife in front of their children less than a day later.
In Illinois, a murder suspect walked free under the state’s 2024 no-cash-bail law, sparking fears for public safety.
In Washington, D.C., repeat offenders freed without bail have been linked to fatal stabbings, sexual assaults, and attacks on police officers.
According to federal officials, the majority of individuals arrested in Washington, D.C., are released pretrial, with several later implicated in new violent crimes. The administration said this revolving-door justice system “endangers the law-abiding public while empowering criminals.”
President Trump has pledged to begin his crackdown in the nation’s capital, with the broader goal of pressuring states to abandon cashless bail systems.
“This reckless policy has to end,” the White House statement read. “We will not allow violent predators to be turned loose again and again to terrorize our communities.”
The announcement is expected to intensify debate over bail reform, a policy championed by criminal justice advocates who argue that cash bail unfairly penalizes poor defendants while wealthier suspects can buy their freedom.
