NEW DELHI – India will suspend all postal deliveries to the United States following confusion over tariffs on parcels, officials said on Aug 24, in a move that underscores growing trade friction between the two countries.
The decision comes after disputes over duties applied to shipments sent through postal channels, with Indian authorities saying they have received conflicting signals from Washington on tariff structures. The uncertainty has disrupted logistics and left exporters facing higher costs and delays.
Postal department officials said the suspension would affect small businesses and individuals who rely on government postal services to send packages, particularly low-value items such as textiles, handicrafts, and documents. Courier services operated by private companies will remain unaffected.
Trade analysts warned that the suspension could further strain economic ties, already tested by disagreements on tariffs and market access in recent years. Both governments have yet to issue formal statements on how long the suspension will last or whether negotiations are underway to resolve the dispute.
