The Voice Editor Dastagir Jahangir Meets Michigan State Rep. Mike McFall on Mental Health in Bangladeshi Community

Discussions focused on tackling stigma, youth well-being, elderly care, and civic engagement among Bangladeshi-Americans.

DETROIT, Aug 22 — The Voice editor Dastagir Jahangir met with Michigan State Representative Mike McFall to address pressing mental health issues within the Bangladeshi community in Michigan, with discussions centering on stigma, youth well-being, and access to affordable care.

Rep. McFall, who has long advocated for mental health policy reforms in Michigan, emphasized that mental health challenges in immigrant communities often remain hidden due to social taboos and silence. This, he noted, prevents many from seeking the necessary treatment and support.

Jahangir pointed out that within the Bangladeshi community — particularly among youth — rates of anxiety, depression, social pressures, and migration-related stress are rising. The meeting highlighted the need for community-based workshops, mental health education in schools, and bilingual (Bangla and English) counseling services to address these challenges.

Other key issues discussed included:
• Education and youth empowerment: Expanding access to higher education, scholarships, and career counseling for Bangladeshi-origin students.
• Elderly immigrant care: Tackling age-related depression, loneliness, and isolation through targeted health and community programs.
• Civic participation: Encouraging Bangladeshi-Americans to engage in political processes to ensure stronger representation in decision-making.

Tahmid Hassan Chowdhury, District Director for Rep. McFall, was also present during the meeting.

Rep. McFall expressed his commitment to working closely with the Bangladeshi community to push for effective policy changes in mental health, education, economic development, and social equity.

Following the meeting, Jahangir remarked, “It is urgent that the real issues facing our community are raised at higher political levels. The dialogue that has now begun on mental health policy is a positive step for us.”
