A deadly crash on the Florida Turnpike has intensified the national debate over so-called “sanctuary state” policies, after it was revealed that the driver involved —an undocumented immigrant from India — was licensed in California under the state’s policy allowing non-citizens to obtain commercial driver’s licenses.
The collision, which killed three American citizens, occurred when the semi-truck attempted an illegal U-turn, causing a minivan to crash into the side of its trailer. Authorities confirmed the driver did not have legal immigration status but held a valid commercial license issued by the State of California.

California Governor Gavin Newsom, in a statement earlier this week, defended the state’s policy of granting driver’s licenses to undocumented individuals, arguing that it contributes to overall road safety by ensuring more drivers are trained and insured.
“Giving driver’s licenses to immigrants — regardless of status — improves public safety,” Newsom said. “It allows us to ensure that more drivers are tested, qualified, and insured on our roads.”
