Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky will meet with U.S. President Donald Trump on Monday. Zelensky himself confirmed the news on Saturday (August 16). He said their talks would take place in Washington, D.C.
On Friday, Trump held a meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska. Following that, he had a long phone conversation with Zelensky.
Zelensky said he had an extensive and important discussion with Trump, after which the date for their meeting in Washington was set.
Zelensky stated, “Ukraine reaffirms its commitment to do everything possible to achieve peace. President Trump briefed me on his meeting with the Russian leader and the key points of their discussion. U.S. influence has played a role in creating this situation. On Monday, I will meet President Trump in Washington, D.C., to discuss ending killings and war. I am grateful for this invitation.”
After meeting Putin, Trump proposed that if Putin and Zelensky wished to meet, he would also be willing to join them. Zelensky welcomed Trump’s proposal, saying there should be a leadership-level meeting between Russia, Ukraine, and the United States to resolve the crisis.
Trump has claimed that both Zelensky and Putin want him to be part of their meeting. However, Russia later clarified that during Putin’s meeting with Trump, there was no discussion of a possible tripartite meeting.
