Washington, August 2, 2025 — The United States Senate has officially confirmed Sean Cairncross as the new National Cyber Director, placing him at the helm of the nation’s cybersecurity strategy and policy efforts.
In this key role, Cairncross will serve as President Donald Trump’s principal advisor on national cybersecurity issues and lead interagency coordination to protect the country’s digital infrastructure.
In a statement following his confirmation, Cairncross expressed gratitude and outlined his priorities for the role.
“I want to thank President Trump for this opportunity. It is an incredible honor to serve our country and this President as the National Cyber Director,” he said.
“As the cyber strategic environment continues to evolve, we must ensure our policy efforts and capabilities deliver results for our national security and the American people.
The United States must dominate the cyber domain through strong collaboration across departments and agencies, as well as private industry. Under President Trump’s leadership, we will enter a new era of effective cybersecurity policy.”
Cairncross brings a strong background in leadership and public service. He previously served as Chief Executive Officer of the Millennium Challenge Corporation, where he oversaw multi-billion-dollar foreign aid programs focused on economic development and anti-corruption reforms.
He also held the position of Senior Advisor to the White House Chief of Staff during President Trump’s first administration, contributing to high-level policy coordination and strategic planning.
The Office of the National Cyber Director (ONCD), created by Congress in 2021, is tasked with driving the implementation of the national cybersecurity strategy, coordinating federal response to cyber threats, and enhancing collaboration between government and the private sector.
Cairncross is expected to take charge at a critical time, as the U.S. faces growing cyber challenges from state and non-state actors targeting critical infrastructure, elections, and economic systems.
Cairncross’s confirmation signals a renewed focus by the Trump administration on asserting U.S. dominance in cyberspace, reinforcing resilience across digital networks, and streamlining cyber policy across federal agencies.
