India’s Gritty Comeback at Old Trafford Forces Series-Deciding Finale

Gill, Jadeja, Sundar anchor historic fightback as England’s win slips through the fingers

Old Trafford, Manchester — In a dramatic display of grit, determination, and batting brilliance, Team India pulled off one of the most memorable comebacks in recent Test history, forcing a draw against England in the fourth Test at Old Trafford and keeping the five-match series alive at 2-1.

Resuming their second innings on day five at 144-2, still trailing by 137, India battled for over five sessions to reach 425-4 before players shook hands with 10 overs remaining. The standout performers were captain Shubman Gill (103), Ravindra Jadeja (unbeaten 103), and Washington Sundar (unbeaten 101), who blunted England’s bowling and pushed India 114 runs ahead before the match ended.

Despite Ben Stokes’ heroic efforts—pushing through shoulder and leg issues to bowl two intense spells—India proved impenetrable. England’s hopes were dented by a dropped catch by Joe Root off Jadeja early in his innings, a missed chance that would haunt the hosts.

England’s Missed Opportunity

England had their eyes on a series win on home soil, but they encountered a wall of resistance. Ben Stokes, already a standout with 5-72 and 141 in the first innings, was visibly struggling with injuries yet gave everything on the field. Jofra Archer’s fiery spell did earn him Gill’s wicket, but the fifth-wicket stand between Jadeja and Sundar proved unbreakable.

Root’s critical dropped chance off Jadeja turned out to be the turning point. England could barely produce another opportunity as both Indian batters completed their respective centuries, frustrating the hosts’ bowling unit that ran out of steam.

Indian Spirit Revives Series

India were 0-2 and staring at a potential innings defeat earlier in the Test. But Gill’s leadership and confident strokeplay throughout the series (scoring 722 runs so far) have been instrumental. The absence of injured wicketkeeper Rishabh Pant was mitigated by Sundar’s promotion and composed performance.

Captain Gill, now India’s highest scorer in a single Test series, praised his team’s spirit: “We were under a lot of pressure after losing two early wickets, but the way we responded shows our character. This team never gives up.”

England now face serious selection and fitness concerns ahead of the fifth and final Test at The Oval. With Stokes nursing injuries and key seamers worn out, changes seem inevitable.

A Series to Remember

This nail-biting contest has rekindled memories of the 2005 Ashes—ironically, also producing a dramatic draw at Old Trafford. With India looking to level the series and England seeking a historic double, the final match promises to be a thriller.
