Bangladesh Awami League fears potential prison killings; Nasim accuses Yunus-led regime of orchestrating violence against party leaders and religious minorities.
Dhaka, July 27, 2025 —
Bahauddin Nasim, Joint General Secretary of the Bangladesh Awami League, has raised serious alarm over an alleged government move to transfer more than a hundred detained former ministers and Members of Parliament affiliated with the party to Dhaka’s Keraniganj Central Jail.
According to Nasim, the Awami League fears that the transfer may be part of a broader conspiracy to assassinate key leaders currently in custody. “We have received this information through our party sources,” he said. “We are deeply worried and anxious about the government’s intentions.”
Speaking to reporters, Nasim stated that since August 5, 2024—when the military-backed interim government assumed control—nearly thirty Awami League leaders and activists have been killed. “These weren’t accidental deaths; they were tortured and murdered,” he alleged.
He also pointed to a previous incident at Gazipur Central Jail, where a plan to kill detained leaders was foiled after the conspiracy came to light.
Nasim directly blamed the current government led by Nobel laureate Dr. Muhammad Yunus for what he described as systematic political violence. “All major untoward incidents and killings since August 5 have taken place with the direct support of the Yunus-led government,” he asserted.
Further escalating his accusations, Nasim claimed that the interim administration is not only targeting Awami League leaders but also persecuting religious minorities across the country.
“These attacks show a clear pattern of political repression and communal persecution,” he warned.
The Yunus government has yet to issue an official response to the allegations. Meanwhile, the international community continues to monitor developments in Bangladesh amid growing concern over human rights violations and the erosion of democratic norms.
