Washington, D.C., July 2025 — A close ally of President Donald Trump has disclosed staggering figures regarding Russian military casualties in the ongoing war in Ukraine, painting a bleak picture of the Kremlin’s battlefield losses.
Speaking on Capitol Hill, Senator Lindsey Graham cited intelligence reports suggesting that Russia has suffered over 1 million casualties, including both killed and wounded, since the full-scale invasion began in 2022. Graham, who recently returned from a fact-finding mission in Kyiv, described the toll as “unsustainable” and warned that more than 5,000 Russian soldiers continue to die daily.
The revelation comes amid growing frustration within the Trump administration over stalled peace negotiations. President Trump has threatened to impose 100% tariffs on countries that continue to purchase Russian oil and gas if a ceasefire is not reached within 50 days. The proposed sanctions, part of the Sanctioning Russia Act of 2025, aim to pressure Moscow into ending its offensive, which has already claimed hundreds of thousands of lives.
Despite the mounting losses, Russian forces have continued their slow advance in eastern Ukraine, with President Vladimir Putin reportedly determined to secure territorial gains before the autumn rains hinder military operations. Analysts suggest that Putin remains convinced he can outlast Western pressure and emerge victorious.
The Kremlin has not officially responded to the casualty figures, though Russian state media has previously downplayed battlefield losses. Independent estimates from Western intelligence agencies and think tanks largely corroborate the scale of the devastation, with some placing Russian troop losses between 700,000 and 1 million.
As the war grinds into its fourth year, the human cost continues to escalate, and diplomatic efforts remain fraught. Whether Trump’s tariff ultimatum will shift the calculus in Moscow remains to be seen.
