Trump Escalates Jail Threats as Approval Plummets

President Donald Trump is intensifying threats to imprison his political enemies—even as his public support continues to nosedive, exposing what many see as a dangerous convergence of authoritarian ambition and political desperation.

The Justice Department, under Trump’s direction, has launched criminal investigations into former FBI Director James Comey and former CIA Director John Brennan. The move appears retaliatory, tied to their roles in the Russia probe. Trump himself recently declared the two may “pay a price”—a chilling promise of retribution that critics say lacks any legitimate legal basis.

At the same time, Trump is expanding the use of federal paramilitary forces, most recently deploying immigration agents heavily across Los Angeles’ MacArthur Park. This show of force mirrors similar tactics used during periods of political vulnerability.

All of this is happening as Trump’s approval ratings plunge. A new Gallup survey shows steep declines in public support—particularly on immigration—highlighting growing discontent with his policies and leadership style.

David Kurtz, editor-at-large at Talking Points Memo, explains that these escalating threats are not signs of strength, but rather attempts to mask vulnerability. “Trump uses intimidation and law enforcement as theater—to project power and discourage resistance,” Kurtz says. “But it’s backfiring. His authoritarian overreach is feeding public backlash and accelerating his political decline.”

The growing gap between Trump’s aggressive rhetoric and his waning popularity suggests a vicious cycle: as he weakens politically, he leans harder on undemocratic tactics—only to alienate more voters and deepen the crisis.
