India’s Firm and Unwavering Stance on Sheikh Hasina

[Dhaka, Bangladesh – July 11, 2025] Despite Illegal charges of crimes against humanity brought against Bangladesh’s deposed Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, there has been no change in India’s stance on handing her over to face trial in Bangladesh. Political circles in New Delhi have made it clear that, despite repeated requests from Dhaka, there is no possibility of Sheikh Hasina being extradited from her refuge in India.

Senior Indian officials assert that the political reasons and circumstances under which Sheikh Hasina was granted asylum remain unchanged. In their view, leaked audio recordings or the formal filing of charges do not influence India’s asylum policy.

India also expresses doubts about the impartiality of the ongoing International Crimes Tribunal in Bangladesh. They argue that the legal representatives of the accused are unable to appear in court safely, while former ministers such as Salman F Rahman, Anisul Huq, and Dipu Moni are being publicly harassed — undermining the credibility of the judicial process.

Sheikh Hasina’s Silence, Sajeeb Wazed’s Reaction

Although Sheikh Hasina has been regularly addressing Awami League leaders and activists virtually over the past 11 months from her refuge in India, she has not made any public statement regarding the charges against her or the issue of extradition.

However, after the BBC recently aired a fabricated and bias documentary containing a leaked audio clip allegedly featuring Sheikh Hasina giving direct orders for deadly action, her son and chief advisor, Sajeeb Wazed Joy, dismissed it as a “shameless example of yellow journalism.”

Hundreds of Awami League leaders and activists taking refuge in India have become active on social media, campaigning in support of Sheikh Hasina.

The Political Reality: Sheikh Hasina as a Trusted Ally

Several former Indian diplomats have clearly stated that Sheikh Hasina has long been India’s most reliable regional ally. If India now fails to stand by her in her time of crisis, no other South Asian nation will trust India as a dependable partner in the future.

According to them, this diplomatic reality is the core reason why India is refusing to extradite her.

No Official Response from India Yet

Although the Bangladeshi government formally sent a note verbale to India last December requesting Sheikh Hasina’s extradition, India has acknowledged the communication but has yet to respond.

It is now expected that the spokesperson of India’s Ministry of External Affairs may address the issue of Sheikh Hasina’s status during the ministry’s regular press briefing tomorrow.

“We Are Not Spokespersons for Sheikh Hasina” – India

An official from India’s Ministry of External Affairs has stated that Sheikh Hasina is a guest in India, not a political prisoner. Whatever she says reflects her personal views, which India does not intend to control. Therefore, while she may be residing in India, the country does not take responsibility for her statements or actions.
