Trump Appoints New NASA Chief in Apparent Snub to Elon Musk

Washington, July 10, 2025 — In a move widely interpreted as a political rebuke to tech mogul Elon Musk, U.S. President Donald Trump has appointed Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy as interim administrator of NASA, replacing the previously nominated Musk ally, Jared Isaacman.
The announcement, made via Trump’s Truth Social account late Wednesday, praised Duffy’s leadership in modernizing America’s transportation infrastructure and declared him “a fantastic leader of the ever more important Space Agency.” Duffy responded on X, saying he was “honored to accept this mission,” adding, “Time to take over space. Let’s launch”.
The decision follows Trump’s abrupt withdrawal of Isaacman’s nomination in May, just days before a Senate confirmation vote. Isaacman, a billionaire private astronaut and longtime SpaceX collaborator, had been recommended by Musk. Trump later cited Isaacman’s “prior associations” and political donations to Democrats as reasons for the reversal, stating it was “inappropriate” for someone so closely tied to Musk to lead NASA.
The fallout comes amid growing tensions between Trump and Musk, once dubbed “First Buddy” during the early months of the administration. Musk’s recent formation of a third political party and criticism of Trump’s domestic policy bill have further strained the relationship.
Isaacman, while expressing disappointment, called Duffy’s appointment “a great move” and emphasized the need for NASA to be led by someone the president trusts. He also clarified that his relationship with Musk is strictly professional and that he holds no equity in SpaceX.
Duffy steps into the role at a critical juncture for NASA, which faces budget cuts, mass layoffs, and ambitious goals including lunar and Martian missions. His appointment signals a shift toward consolidating political loyalty within key federal agencies, as Trump continues to reshape his administration’s leadership team.
The White House has not indicated when a permanent NASA administrator will be named.
