Kremlin Seeks Clarity on U.S. Weapons to Ukraine After Trump Comments

MOSCOW, July 8 (Reuters) – The Kremlin said on Tuesday it will need time to determine exactly what types and quantities of weapons the United States is providing to Ukraine, following remarks by former President Donald Trump.

On Monday, Trump stated that the U.S. would supply Ukraine with additional arms—primarily defensive—to help counter intensified Russian offensives.

Responding to Trump’s comments, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov noted the ongoing flow of military aid to Ukraine from the West, especially from Europe.

“Clearly, arms deliveries are continuing, particularly from European countries, which are actively supplying Ukraine,” Peskov said. “As for the U.S., the specifics of their supplies will take time to fully understand.”

Russian forces currently control just under 20% of Ukrainian territory, including Crimea, all of Luhansk, most of three other regions, and parts of three more.

Peskov also welcomed Trump’s interest in initiating direct talks between Russia and Ukraine, expressing hope for renewed dialogue and trade between Moscow and Washington.

“There is real potential for restoring Russian-U.S. trade and economic ties,” Peskov said. “However, current U.S. sanctions— which we consider illegal—are damaging not only to Russian businesses but also to American companies.”
