A tragic incident occurred at Milan Bergamo Airport in northern Italy on Tuesday morning when a man was killed after being sucked into the engine of a departing aircraft, according to local media reports.
The aircraft, operated by Spanish budget airline Volotea, was set to fly to Asturias in northwestern Spain when the accident happened. CNN affiliate Sky TG24 reported that the plane had just left its stand and was preparing for takeoff when the man entered the tarmac and was pulled into the engine.
Italian newspaper Corriere della Sera cited unnamed airport officials stating the individual was not a passenger or connected to the airline. Volotea confirmed the man was “seriously injured” and not affiliated with their crew or passengers. All 154 passengers and six crew members onboard were unharmed and are receiving psychological support, the airline said.
Authorities have launched an investigation into how the individual accessed the restricted runway area. Milan airport officials and police have been contacted for further comment.
Following a temporary halt in operations, flights from Milan Bergamo Airport resumed by midday local time.
