China has now made its stance on the ongoing war between Russia and Ukraine completely clear. Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi, representing the country known as a close ally of Russia, stated that they will not accept a Russian defeat in the Russia-Ukraine war.
On Thursday, in Brussels, Belgium’s capital, Wang Yi met with the European Union’s High Representative for Foreign Affairs, Kaja Kallas. During the four-hour meeting, when Kallas sought to know China’s final position on the Russia-Ukraine war, Wang said, “Beijing will in no way accept a Russian defeat in this war. We will not let Russia lose.”
Wang Yi also explained the reasons behind China’s stance. He said that if Russia is defeated in the Ukraine war, the United States’ attention will shift entirely to China and the Asia-Pacific region, making Beijing the sole target of Washington.
However, Wang Yi claimed that Beijing has not provided any military assistance to Moscow since the start of the war. He told the EU’s foreign affairs chief, “If China had supported Russia, this war would have ended a long time ago.”
Alongside the Russia-Ukraine war, Kaja Kallas and Wang Yi also discussed issues like cyber security, rare earth minerals, and various topics related to EU-China bilateral trade during their meeting.
The following day, Friday, during a briefing at China’s Foreign Ministry, journalists asked ministry spokesperson Mao Ning about this issue. Mao Ning said, “China’s position on the Russia-Ukraine war is neutral. China wants the war to end through diplomacy, dialogue, and peaceful means. Because if this war drags on, no side will benefit.”
