Zelenskyy and Trump Pledge Joint Defence Cooperation Amid Escalating

Conflict July 5, 2025 — Kyiv/Washington — In a significant diplomatic exchange, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and U.S. President Donald Trump held what both sides described as a “fruitful” phone call on July 4, agreeing to deepen joint defence efforts as Russian aerial assaults intensify across Ukraine.Zelenskyy stated that the two leaders discussed the deteriorating security situation, including recent Russian airstrikes and frontline developments. He emphasized that Trump was “very well informed” and expressed gratitude for continued U.S. support. The leaders agreed to:- Strengthen Ukraine’s air defences, particularly through enhanced cooperation on Patriot missile systems and drone technologies.- Initiate joint defence production, with both sides exploring direct projects and investment opportunities.- Coordinate team-level meetings to develop actionable plans for bolstering Ukraine’s ability to “defend the sky”.The call came just one day after Trump’s reportedly “disappointing” conversation with Russian President Vladimir Putin, who reaffirmed Moscow’s commitment to its war objectives. Hours later, Russia launched its largest drone and missile barrage on Kyiv to date, injuring at least 23 civilians and damaging infrastructure. While the Trump administration has paused some weapons shipments due to concerns over U.S. stockpiles, the president signaled a willingness to revisit those decisions in light of Ukraine’s urgent needs.Zelenskyy reiterated Ukraine’s readiness to pursue a “just, lasting, and dignified peace,” but stressed that robust defence cooperation remains essential to protect lives and sovereignty.
