Israel has once again attacked Lebanon, breaking the terms of the ceasefire. On Friday, Israeli forces shelled and destroyed a house, a clothing factory, and a government bulldozer in southern Lebanon.
According to a report by Lebanon’s state-run National News Agency, around noon on Thursday, an Israeli shell destroyed a house in the town of Aita al-Shaab in Lebanon’s southern Nabatieh province, a government bulldozer in the town of Meiss El Jabal, and a clothing factory in the town of Marjayoun.
The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) launched a military operation in Lebanon in September last year. The operation targeted Hezbollah, an armed Islamist group based in Lebanon. During a month-long campaign from September to October, the IDF destroyed almost all of Hezbollah’s key facilities and killed nearly all of its top commanders, including Hezbollah’s leader Hassan Nasrallah.
At the same time, Israeli troops established bases in southern Lebanon, where Hezbollah’s critical infrastructure is located.
In November last year, the Lebanese government signed a ceasefire agreement with Israel. Under the terms of the agreement, Israeli troops were supposed to withdraw from Lebanon and the IDF was not to carry out further attacks in Lebanon.
However, even eight months after the ceasefire deal, Israeli forces have not yet withdrawn from Lebanon.
Recently, US President Donald Trump made a proposal to the Lebanese government, stating that if Hezbollah does not surrender its weapons by November of this year, the IDF will resume its operations in Lebanon starting December.
Meanwhile, Hezbollah has announced that it is not willing to surrender its weapons.
