A video showing a woman being sexually assaulted has sparked nationwide outrage in Bangladesh after it circulated widely online.The woman, who later spoke to local media, said she was raped last Thursday while visiting her father’s house in Cumilla district, central Bangladesh. According to police, a neighbour broke into the house and attacked her. Several people at the scene filmed the assault.Police have arrested five people, including the main suspect and four others accused of filming and sharing the video. The alleged rapist, identified as 36-year-old Fazor Ali, was beaten by local residents after the attack and was hospitalized with injuries to his arms and legs, preventing him from appearing in court on Sunday.The survivor, who belongs to Bangladesh’s Hindu minority, told local news outlets that the suspect entered her father’s home “with bad intentions and tortured her.”The attack has ignited protests across the country, with human rights groups demanding swift justice. Ain O Salish Kendra, a national legal aid and rights group, called the assault “a serious failure of the state and a breakdown in security,” urging authorities to send a “clear and firm message” that such brutality will not be tolerated.Manusher Jonno Foundation, another rights organization based in Dhaka, condemned those who filmed and shared the video, saying they subjected the survivor to a “second assault.”Authorities have promised a prompt investigation. Asif Nazrul, a government law adviser, said at a press briefing: “Like ordinary citizens, we are deeply shocked by the rape. The home ministry has taken immediate action, and those responsible for both the assault and the video’s distribution have been arrested.”This case is the latest in a series of violent incidents against women in Bangladesh. Earlier this year, the rape and death of an eight-year-old girl led to mass protests demanding legal reforms and faster justice for victims. Activists have also called for clearer definitions of rape in Bangladeshi law, arguing that current statutes are vague.
