Bangladeshis arrested in Malaysia linked to ISIS: Malaysian IGP

Bangladeshis arrested in Malaysia are involved with the international militant group Islamic State (ISIS), according to the country’s Inspector General of Police, Datuk Seri Mohamad Khalid Ismail.He stated that several of those arrested have already been deported. This information was reported on Monday (30 June) by the news outlet New Straits Times.According to the report, some Bangladeshis, directly involved in extremist activities under the influence of ISIS’s radical ideology, were detained in Malaysia under the Security Offenses (Special Measures) Act 2012 (SOSMA).Malaysian Inspector General of Police Datuk Seri Mohd Khalid Ismail confirmed this. He said, “Some of the detainees are being held under the SOSMA law, while several have already been deported to their home country.”He further stated that a few are still in police custody and are being interrogated as part of the ongoing investigation. Khalid added that detailed information on the matter will be shared soon through a press conference.Earlier, the Malaysian police arrested 36 Bangladeshis, who were allegedly influenced by ISIS ideology and violent extremism, and were building a radical network.Malaysia’s Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail said that this coordinated security operation began on 24 April. The operation was carried out in three phases in the states of Selangor and Johor.Of the 36 arrested, five have been charged with terrorism-related crimes at the Shah Alam and Johor Bahru Sessions Courts in Malaysia.
