Across the United States, federal immigration officers are increasingly concealing their identities during operations—donning balaclavas, neck gaiters, sunglasses, and casual clothing. From immigration raids to protest crackdowns, masked agents have become a common sight, sparking alarm among civil rights advocates and former law enforcement officials.Mike German, a former FBI agent now at the Brennan Center for Justice, warns that this trend represents a disturbing shift. “Masking symbolizes law enforcement’s drift away from democratic accountability,” he said. “It undermines public trust and blurs the line between legitimate authority and abuse.”The Department of Homeland Security defends the use of masks as a safety measure, citing unspecified threats. However, critics argue the lack of transparency increases the risk of impersonation, unlawful arrests, and violations of civil rights. The recent killing of two Democratic lawmakers by a fake officer has only heightened these concerns.German explains that the post-9/11 policing model—marked by surveillance, secrecy, and the rise of “fusion centers”—has eroded oversight. Now, agents from agencies like the FBI and DEA are being diverted to ICE operations, often lacking proper authority for civil immigration enforcement.“Many of these agents don’t want their communities to know they’re involved in these controversial operations,” German said. “That alone reveals how questionable these actions are.”Democratic lawmakers have introduced legislation to ban law enforcement from masking during duties, emphasizing that public servants must operate transparently—not like “Star Wars stormtroopers.”The consequences are already unfolding. As trust erodes, public resistance to masked officers grows, leading to more aggressive policing and a dangerous cycle. “If people can’t identify who’s using force against them,” German said, “we’re no longer living under democratic law enforcement.”
