Attacks on Civilian Nuclear Facilities Violate International Law: Saudi Arabia

Saudi Arabia’s Nuclear and Radiation Regulatory Commission has stated that military attacks on civilian nuclear facilities are violations of international law. The statement came following Israel’s recent attacks on several of Iran’s nuclear sites.According to a live update from Qatar-based news outlet Al Jazeera, since last Friday, the Israeli military has targeted multiple Iranian nuclear facilities. Among the targets was Iran’s Khondab Heavy Water Research Reactor, which was struck on Thursday.Following Israel’s strike on this civilian nuclear site, Saudi Arabia’s Nuclear and Radiation Regulatory Commission remarked that such attacks breach international legal norms. The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) reported that the main buildings of the Khondab Heavy Water Research Reactor were damaged in the Israeli attack. However, as the facility was still under construction, there were no nuclear materials present. Therefore, it is expected that there is no risk of radiation exposure.Earlier, Israeli forces had also carried out attacks on Iran’s primary uranium enrichment center at Natanz, as well as the underground Fordow Plant.
