At least 16 people have died in landslides triggered by heavy rains in Indonesia. More than five people are missing in this incident. The incident took place in the Central Java province of the country. Local police and disaster officials reported this information on Tuesday today.
Police chief of Pekalangan city in Central Java Province, Doni Prakoso, told local Metro TV that 16 people have been confirmed dead. 10 of the injured people were sent to local hospitals and community health centers.
Doni Prakoso also said that a landslide occurred in that area on Monday. Rescue workers are still trying to rescue the five missing people. It is raining heavily in Pekalangan city. The mountainous areas here have been severely damaged.
Local television footage showed volunteers pulling bodies from the rubble on stretchers. A thick layer of mud has accumulated on the roads of that area.
Disaster officer Bergas Chatursashi Penagyugan said that rescue operations are being disrupted due to the remoteness of the area. Volunteers are preparing to go to the crash site, he told local Compass TV. But due to adverse weather conditions it is not possible to reach there.
