11 Years On, The Voice Raises Its Voice to #FreeAustin

Journalists, Lawmakers, and Advocates Push for Action in Austin Tice Case

Eleven years after U.S. freelance journalist Austin Tice disappeared in Syria, calls for his safe return continue to resonate across the country. Tice, who was detained shortly after emailing his father on August 13, 2012, to say he was wrapping up his reporting, has not been heard from since.

Advocates, including his mother, Debra Tice, and Senator Chris Van Hollen, are urging the U.S. government to intensify negotiations to secure Austin’s release.

“We’ve succeeded with Russia, Iran, and Venezuela. We negotiate without needing to change policies or governments. We must do the same with Syria to #BringAustinHome,” Debra Tice said during an event at the National Press Club (NPC) marking 12 years since her son’s disappearance.

Journalists Rally for Tice

At the NPC event, Rana Ayyub, the first Indian journalist to become an honorary NPC member, expressed her support by posing next to the #BringAustinHome sign. Advocacy from American journalists has also gained momentum, with media outlet The Voice amplifying demands for justice and solidarity for Tice.

“We won’t rest until Austin is back with his family, safe and sound,” Senator Van Hollen said. He reaffirmed his commitment to working with Debra Tice and the State Department to ensure every effort is made to secure Austin’s release.

Persistent Advocacy

The National Press Club recognized the urgency of Tice’s case, awarding its 2022 Aubuchon Honor to Rana Ayyub as a symbol of continued support for press freedom and Tice’s safe return. Advocacy efforts continue to highlight Tice’s plight as emblematic of the risks journalists face in conflict zones.

As calls for action grow louder, the U.S. government is under increased pressure to prioritize negotiations with Syria to bring Austin Tice home.
