Today, June 10, Farzana Rupa’s mother passed away. Rupa was not allowed to bid farewell to her mother. Nor was her mother granted the final comfort of seeing her daughter before passing — both denied a basic human right.

This tragedy is the direct result of Rupa’s unlawful imprisonment in Kashimpur Jail since August 2025 — following the fall of the Sheikh Hasina government.
Since that time, Rupa and her husband, Shakil Ahmed, have been imprisoned for the past 10 months under a fabricated murder case — a political ploy meticulously designed and led by Professor Muhammad Yunus, a Nobel laureate who took control of the interim government through unconstitutional means.
Both Rupa and Shakil have been denied bail, in clear violation of due process, international human rights standards, and basic principles of justice. The case is widely seen as part of a larger campaign of politically motivated persecution unleashed by the Yunus-led administration to silence dissent, cripple opponents, and instill fear in society.
This is not justice. This is state cruelty.
We call on the international community and human rights defenders everywhere: Take notice. Speak out. Demand accountability.
We call on the authorities in Bangladesh: End this injustice. Release Rupa and Shakil. Stop using fabricated cases as tools of political repression.
Our thoughts and prayers are with Rupa, Shakil, and their family.
