Manila, June 8, 2026: A powerful 7.8-magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of the southern Philippine island of Mindanao on Monday, killing at least 19 people and causing widespread destruction across several provinces, according to local officials.
The earthquake occurred at 7:37 a.m. local time (2337 GMT Sunday), triggering tsunami warnings in the Philippines, Indonesia, Japan, and Australia. While some of the alerts were later lifted, authorities remained on high alert as emergency teams assessed the extent of the damage.
Videos and images circulating on social media showed collapsed buildings and heavily damaged infrastructure in affected areas. One widely shared video appeared to show a branch of the popular fast-food chain Jollibee collapsing and being reduced to rubble during the quake.
Hundreds Affected Across Southern Provinces
Local officials reported that at least 134 people were injured in several provinces, including South Cotabato, Sultan Kudarat, Sarangani, and General Santos City. However, the Philippine national disaster management agency has yet to officially confirm the casualty figures.
Rescue and recovery operations were underway as emergency responders searched damaged structures and provided assistance to affected communities.
Government Mobilizes Emergency Response
Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. said government agencies were working in coordination to address the disaster and support affected residents.
In a statement, the president assured the public that the government was fully engaged in relief efforts and pledged continued assistance to communities across Mindanao.
The earthquake struck on the first day of the country’s new academic year. In response, President Marcos ordered the immediate suspension of classes in schools and colleges located in the affected regions to ensure public safety.
More Than 130 Aftershocks Recorded
Seismologists recorded more than 130 aftershocks ranging from magnitude 1.3 to 6.7 following the main earthquake. Authorities warned residents to remain cautious as further tremors could occur in the coming days.
The quake also temporarily disrupted electricity and telecommunications services in the coastal province of Sarangani, although officials later reported that most services had been restored.
Pacific Region Remains Vigilant
The earthquake renewed concerns about seismic activity in the Pacific “Ring of Fire,” where the Philippines is located. The country is among the world’s most earthquake-prone nations due to its position along major tectonic plate boundaries.
Authorities continue to monitor the situation closely as rescue operations proceed and damage assessments are completed.
