Srinagar, September 28, 2026: The Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly on Monday passed a resolution calling for the immediate and urgent restoration of full statehood to the Union Territory, amid strong opposition from Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) legislators.
The resolution was moved by Chief Minister Omar Abdullah and urged the Government of India to restore Jammu and Kashmir’s full statehood. It was passed by voice vote after BJP members walked out of the House.
The resolution also referred to earlier Assembly resolutions passed in 2000 and 2024 concerning autonomy and the region’s constitutional status.
BJP legislators strongly opposed the resolution, with several describing it as unconstitutional and against national interests. They staged protests in the Assembly before walking out ahead of the vote.
The central government has repeatedly said that Jammu and Kashmir’s statehood would be restored at an “appropriate time.” The latest resolution calls for the process to be undertaken immediately and on an urgent basis.
Jammu and Kashmir lost its statehood in August 2019, when the Indian government revoked the region’s special constitutional status under Article 370 and reorganised the former state into the Union Territories of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh.
Assembly elections were held in Jammu and Kashmir in 2024, following which Omar Abdullah’s National Conference-led government came to power.
Although the region now has an elected government, significant administrative powers remain with the Union Territory’s Lieutenant Governor, who is appointed by New Delhi.
The Assembly resolution is not legally binding and, by itself, does not restore Jammu and Kashmir’s statehood.
