The High Court has issued a rule seeking an explanation as to why the formation of fact-finding committees to investigate allegations against 404 pro-Awami League teachers at 22 public universities should not be declared illegal and unlawful.
The court also asked why disciplinary measures, including dismissal, against the teachers should not be stayed.
The respondents have been directed to respond to the rule within four weeks.
Lawyer Chanchal Kumar Biswas represented the petitioners during the hearing. He argued that university authorities cannot initiate such proceedings against 404 teachers solely on the basis of reports published by an online news outlet.
He further argued that such action was not lawful and that university teachers’ freedom to express their views is protected by the Constitution and existing laws.
The fact-finding committees were formed following allegations that the 404 teachers, identified as supporters of the Awami League, had been involved in activities considered hostile to the government.
