US President Donald Trump has claimed that Yemen’s Houthi rebels have agreed not to attack the United States, even as the group continues to carry out attacks against Saudi Arabia.
In an interview with Fox News, Trump said Washington was maintaining regular communication with the Houthis and that the group had agreed not to fight the United States.
Trump had made a similar claim earlier this month. During his visit to Ireland on September 12, he said the Houthis had contacted the United States and expressed a desire to avoid confrontation with American forces.
The latest comments come amid continued Houthi attacks on Saudi Arabia. On Saturday, the group reportedly launched a missile toward the Saudi capital, Riyadh.
Trump warns Iran of possible escalation
Trump also issued a warning to Iran during the Fox News interview, saying he was nearing a decision over the ongoing conflict with Tehran.
He said Iran needed to change its behavior and suggested that the United States had several options, including further military action, severe economic pressure or reaching an agreement.
Trump also indicated that he could be willing to meet Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian during the high-level session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York. There was no immediate response from Tehran or Pezeshkian to Trump’s remarks.
Trump has previously claimed that the conflict with Iran could end after the US midterm elections in November.
US issues worldwide travel warning
As tensions continue to rise across the Middle East, the US State Department issued a worldwide travel alert on Sunday.
The department warned that Iran and groups backed by Tehran could target US citizens, affiliated organizations and American interests in various parts of the world.
The warning comes as Washington faces growing security concerns linked to the widening regional conflict and ongoing attacks involving Iran-aligned groups.
