U.S. President Donald Trump has warned that the United States is nearing a decision on the ongoing Iran conflict, saying that “very big things” could happen soon if Tehran does not change its position and behavior.
In an interview with Fox News on Sunday, Trump said he was considering several options regarding Iran, including taking tougher military action, allowing further economic pressure to weaken the country, or pursuing a negotiated settlement.
Trump did not provide details about what specific action he might take, but said a major development could come in the near future.
The U.S. president also left open the possibility of diplomatic talks with Iran. Asked whether he would meet Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian during the upcoming high-level session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York, Trump said he would probably be open to such a meeting.
There was no immediate response from the Iranian government or Pezeshkian’s office to Trump’s remarks.
The 81st UN General Assembly high-level week is being held at UN headquarters in New York from September 18 to 28, with the main general debate scheduled for September 22–28.
Trump also addressed other conflicts in the Middle East. Referring to recent Houthi ballistic missile attacks targeting Saudi Arabia, he said the United States was maintaining regular communication with Yemen’s Houthi movement. Trump claimed that the Houthis had agreed not to engage directly with U.S. forces.
The latest remarks come after Trump previously said he expected the war with Iran to end after the November midterm elections. His latest comments, however, suggest that Washington is considering significant decisions regarding the conflict sooner.
Amid rising tensions in the Middle East, the U.S. State Department also issued a new travel advisory on Sunday. It warned that further deterioration of the regional situation could lead Iran and groups aligned with it to target U.S. interests, businesses and institutions in various parts of the world.
The advisory also warned that locations associated with U.S. citizens could face increased risks.
