PORTO — Erling Haaland scored twice as Manchester City defeated Porto 2-0 away from home in their opening match of the Champions League league phase on Tuesday night.

City created several chances in the first half but were unable to break the deadlock. Porto goalkeeper Diogo Costa produced a string of impressive saves to keep the hosts in contention, sending the teams into halftime level at 0-0.

The visitors finally took the lead shortly after the restart. Haaland headed home a cross from Enzo Fernández in the 47th minute to put City ahead.

Haaland then doubled the advantage in the closing moments of the match, finishing from a pass by Rayan Aït-Nouri to complete his brace and secure all three points for the English side.

The 2-0 victory marked Manchester City’s first Champions League win under new head coach Enzo Maresca.
