A total of 174 Bangladeshi nationals detained at Libya’s Tajura Detention Centre have been repatriated to Bangladesh.
They returned home on Tuesday (September 1) at 9:47am on a Burak Air flight, under an initiative involving the Bangladesh Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Bangladesh Embassy in Libya and the Ministry of Expatriates’ Welfare and Overseas Employment, with cooperation from the Libyan government and the International Organization for Migration (IOM).
According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, most of the returnees had entered Libya after being lured or assisted by human traffickers while attempting to travel to Europe illegally by sea. Some of them reportedly said they had been abducted and tortured at different times while in Libya.
Officials from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the relevant ministries and the IOM received the returnees at the airport. They were also urged to share their harrowing experiences in Libya with others to help raise awareness about the risks of irregular migration and human trafficking.
The IOM provided each returnee with transportation assistance, food supplies and basic medical care. Temporary accommodation will also be arranged if necessary.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Bangladesh Embassy in Libya, the Ministry of Expatriates’ Welfare and Overseas Employment and the IOM are working together to safely repatriate Bangladeshi nationals detained at various detention centres across Libya.
