Tennis legend Roger Federer has heaped praise on one of his greatest career rivals, Novak Djokovic, describing the Serbian’s ability to maintain his performance and fitness late in his career as extraordinary.
Federer made the remarks while speaking to reporters after taking part in an exhibition match at Flushing Meadows, the venue for the US Open.
Asked whether he considered Djokovic the greatest player of all time, Federer, 45, said he had no problem with such a view, acknowledging that Djokovic’s achievements have been “incredible.”
Federer admitted that he had expected Djokovic’s career to experience a significant decline at some point. However, Djokovic’s ability to reach the semifinals of all four Grand Slam tournaments last year and continue that level of performance this year has surprised many, Federer said.
He also praised Djokovic for addressing weaknesses early in his career and developing the ability to excel across all three major court surfaces—hard, grass and clay.
Djokovic is currently chasing a record-extending 25th Grand Slam singles title. If he succeeds, he will move clear of Margaret Court’s historic record of 24 singles major titles and become the outright leader in Grand Slam history.
