A bizarre crime has emerged amid the devastation caused by flash floods in Nepal, with 29 people arrested for allegedly breaking open a bank vault swept away by floodwaters and looting cash inside.
The bank safe was reportedly carried away by powerful currents from the Bhotekoshi area of Rasuwa before becoming lodged along the banks of the Trishuli River near Belkhukhola in Galchi Rural Municipality-4 of Dhading district.
Dhading District Police said they rushed to the scene after receiving information that some locals were breaking open the vault and taking the cash inside. Following an initial search, police detained 29 suspects and recovered Nepalese rupees 9,268,505.
Most of those arrested are residents of the Masta area of Galchi-4. Others are from Adamghat in Galchi-6 and Adamtar in Siddhalek-7. Some of the suspects are permanent residents of Chitwan and Parsa districts but had been living in Dhading.
The suspects are aged between 19 and 49.
Police are investigating the original source of the recovered cash and examining whether anyone else was involved in the alleged looting.
In a separate incident, two people were arrested for allegedly stealing gold earrings from the body of a woman who died in the floods.
