Real Madrid cruised to a 4-1 victory over Real Sociedad at the Santiago Bernabéu on Wednesday, with Kylian Mbappé scoring a brilliant hat-trick to lead his side to a second straight win in the new La Liga season.
Real Madrid started aggressively, with Mbappé seeing an early effort saved by Sociedad goalkeeper Álex Remiro in the seventh minute. Sociedad also threatened, but Thibaut Courtois denied Mikel Oyarzabal in the 11th minute.
The hosts finally broke the deadlock in the 40th minute. Federico Valverde carried the ball from his own half before finding Mbappé, who beat his marker with his first touch and fired a superb left-footed shot into the net.
Real Sociedad responded just before halftime. After Ochieng’s effort was blocked, Luka Sučić reacted quickest to the rebound and equalised in the 44th minute, sending the teams into the break level at 1-1.
Real Madrid took control after the restart. Mbappé restored their lead in the 60th minute following a fine combination involving Valverde and Jude Bellingham. After a one-two with Bellingham, the French forward cut inside and curled a right-footed effort into the far corner.
Eight minutes later, Vinícius Júnior extended the advantage. Bellingham won the ball near the Sociedad penalty area and set up the Brazilian, who calmly finished from close range to make it 3-1.
Mbappé completed his hat-trick in the 80th minute. Vinícius advanced down the left and slipped the ball through an opponent’s legs before Mbappé lifted the ball over the advancing Remiro and into the net.
Real Madrid appeared to score a fifth in the 90th minute when Brahim Díaz converted the rebound after Remiro saved a shot from Endrick. However, the goal was ruled out for offside following a VAR review.
After the match, Mourinho praised his players for responding well to the pressure of playing at the Bernabéu.
“The team could have scored a few more goals in the second half,” the Real Madrid coach said.
Captain Valverde also highlighted the importance of keeping Mbappé involved. “We have to give Mbappé as many balls as possible to keep him comfortable so he can score goals and be happy,” he said.
The victory gives Real Madrid two wins from their opening two league matches under Mourinho, while Real Sociedad have suffered back-to-back defeats.
Real Sociedad will look for their first points of the season against Espanyol on Saturday. Real Madrid’s next La Liga match is against newly promoted Málaga on Sunday.
Before that, the Champions League league-phase draw will take place in Monaco on Thursday, with Real Madrid placed in Pot 1.
