BEIJING – The three astronauts aboard China’s Shenzhou-23 mission are approaching their third month in space while continuing scientific experiments, space station maintenance and regular health monitoring, according to the China Manned Space Agency (CMSA).
Over the past week, astronauts Zou Yangqiu, Chang Qiyuan and Lai Kaiying carried out a range of scheduled activities aboard the space station.
Scientific experiments and maintenance
The crew completed several scientific experiments, including replacing and cleaning experimental samples, maintaining electrodes and cleaning lenses.
They also replaced gas cylinders, operated vacuum-pumping equipment and removed waste gases as part of routine station maintenance.
To help ensure a safe living environment, the astronauts conducted regular microbial monitoring. Samples were collected from cabin air, various surfaces and the station’s water system to track the presence and spread of microorganisms.
The data are expected to provide researchers with further information on microbial control during long-duration space missions.
Health monitoring and exercise
The astronauts also underwent health checks focusing on vision and cardiovascular function.
The measurements will help scientists assess how prolonged exposure to the space environment affects the human body and support preparations for future long-duration crewed missions.
As part of their daily health regimen, the astronauts are also exercising regularly using specialised equipment designed to reduce bone loss, a major health concern during extended stays in microgravity.
One-year mission
The Shenzhou-23 spacecraft was launched on May 24. The three astronauts are scheduled to spend about a year in space, collecting data and conducting experiments aimed at supporting China’s preparations for future long-duration human spaceflight missions.
