Dhaka Medical ENT Department Head Attacked in Shantinagar

- August 19, 2026, 10:31 AM ET

DHAKA — The head of the Ear, Nose and Throat Department at Dhaka Medical College Hospital was seriously injured after being attacked by a group of men outside a private diagnostic center in the capital’s Shantinagar area, police said.

Professor Md. Asadur Rahman, 55, was attacked at about 11:30 p.m. Monday as he was leaving his private chamber at Popular Diagnostic Centre and getting into a CNG-run auto-rickshaw to return to his home in Mohammadpur. He is undergoing treatment at Dhaka Medical College Hospital.

Police have arrested one person in connection with the attack.

Rashedul Islam, an employee of Popular Diagnostic Centre who took Rahman to the hospital, said the physician had finished seeing patients at Building No. 3 of the Shantinagar branch and had just boarded the auto-rickshaw when four or five men stopped the vehicle.

The attackers then assaulted him with locally made weapons, leaving injuries to his head, eye and nose, Rashedul said. He could not say who the attackers were or why they targeted the doctor.

Paltan Police Station Officer-in-Charge Mostafa Kamal Khan said a case had been filed over the attack and one suspect arrested.

According to the OC, the arrested man told investigators that the attack stemmed from anger over the treatment of a patient. The suspect claimed to be a friend of the patient and alleged that the physician had provided “wrong treatment.”

Police, however, have not accepted that account as established fact.

“This is the statement of the patient’s relatives. But we believe the matter requires further investigation. We are continuing our work,” Khan said.

Rahman remained hospitalized with his injuries. No one speaking on his behalf at the hospital was willing to comment on the incident, according to the report.

Police are continuing their investigation to establish the motive for the attack and identify the other people involved.
