Bangladesh Chhatra League Holds Boat Rally on Buriganga Ahead of Expected Hasina Return

- November 08, 2026, 04:07 PM ET

Dhaka — Leaders and activists of the Jagannath University unit of the Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) held a boat rally on the Buriganga River near Sadarghat in Dhaka on Sunday, expressing their expectation of former prime minister and Awami League president Sheikh Hasina’s return to Bangladesh.

The rally was led by Ashik-i-Atahar Mesbah, organisational secretary of the university unit, and joint general secretary Mehedi Hasan.

Speaking about the initiative, Mesbah said the rally was organised to convey the message of Hasina’s expected return in December.

“December is our month of victory. It reminds us of the importance of independence, sovereignty, democracy and people’s rights in Bangladesh’s history,” he said.

He added that the Jagannath University unit of the student organisation was committed to supporting what he described as Hasina’s anticipated return to the country.

According to Mesbah, Hasina has expressed her intention to return to Bangladesh in December 2026 in several interviews.

“We believe that the daughter of Bangabandhu delivers on what she says. Millions of people across Bangladesh are waiting for her,” he said.

The organisers also expressed hope that December would usher in peace, justice, human dignity and democratic rights in the country.

Emphasising the need for political reconciliation, Mesbah said the lessons of history should encourage coexistence rather than division, justice rather than revenge, and peaceful political solutions rather than conflict.

The rally comes amid continuing political debate over Hasina’s possible return to Bangladesh. However, no confirmed date or official arrangement for her return was mentioned in the organisers’ statements.
