ERBIL, Iraq — August 17 : Two drones targeted the office of the Prime Minister of Iraq’s Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) in northern Iraq on Monday, according to the KRG’s security authorities. No casualties were reported in the attack.
The security agency said the drones were launched from Iranian territory. It was not immediately clear whether the drones successfully struck their intended targets, and no group has claimed responsibility for the attack.
KRG Prime Minister Masrour Barzani condemned the incident, describing it as a “dangerous escalation” and a direct threat to regional security and stability.
According to Barzani, an investigation by the Kurdistan Counter Terrorism Directorate found that the attack targeted his private office as well as the residence of the head of the region’s security and intelligence agencies.
Iran and Iran-backed armed groups have repeatedly accused the Kurdistan Region of providing shelter to Iranian Kurdish opposition groups, which Tehran considers a security threat. Kurdish authorities, however, have denied allowing their territory to be used to threaten neighboring countries.
The Kurdistan Region has faced repeated drone and rocket attacks in recent years. In July 2025, a series of drone attacks on oil facilities in the region disrupted more than half of its crude oil production. Security officials at the time pointed to Iran-backed militias as possible perpetrators.
In April 2024, a drone strike on the Khor Mor gas field, one of the region’s largest gas facilities, killed four Yemeni workers and injured two others. The attack also forced authorities to suspend gas supplies to regional power plants.
The latest incident comes amid continuing regional tensions involving Iran and armed groups operating across the Middle East.
