New Delhi, July 27: India’s youth-led Cockroach Janata Party (CJP) has warned to resume nationwide protests from Tuesday if the government fails to honor its alleged commitment to withdraw legal cases against demonstrators and release detained activists.
The warning comes weeks after the group suspended its 37-day sit-in protest at Jantar Mantar following the resignation of Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, describing the move as a gesture of goodwill.
In a post on X, CJP spokesperson Ashutosh Ranka alleged that authorities had violated an agreement under which no further legal action would be taken against protesters. He claimed that hundreds of students from Bihar and West Bengal had been detained, while volunteers supporting the movement in New Delhi had also been arrested. He further alleged that students in several states were being subjected to surveillance and harassment.
“We demand the immediate withdrawal of all FIRs filed against protesters, the release of detained students, and an assurance that Delhi Police and BJP-ruled states will not register any new cases,” Ranka said. “Otherwise, we will have no option but to return to the streets.”
The group has also demanded that the government provide a written agreement confirming the withdrawal of cases by Tuesday.
Following a third round of talks with government ministers at the Constitution Club on Saturday, CJP said the Centre had agreed in principle to compensate the families of students who allegedly died by suicide in connection with the NEET examination controversy and to withdraw cases against protesters nationwide.
The organisation said it had submitted a five-point charter of demands, with the next round of discussions expected in four weeks.
Several criminal cases were reportedly filed against protesters after the nationwide “Chalo Parliament” demonstration on July 20. Since the beginning of the movement, CJP has insisted that all such cases be withdrawn and that no further legal action be taken against participants.
