Oil Tanker Destroyed in Naval Mine Blast in the Strait of Hormuz

Date:

A crude oil tanker was reportedly destroyed after striking a naval mine while transiting the Strait of Hormuz, according to Iran’s Mehr News Agency. Initial reports said the vessel had switched off its Automatic Identification System (AIS) and departed from a shipping route designated by Iranian authorities before the explosion occurred.

Iran had warned on June 26 that all vessels navigating the strategically important waterway must remain within designated maritime corridors. Tehran also reaffirmed what it described as its sovereign authority over the management of navigation through the Strait of Hormuz, cautioning that ships violating the prescribed routes could face serious consequences.

Preliminary reports indicated that the tanker had left the approved maritime corridor and entered an area outside the designated safe passage despite repeated warnings. Iranian authorities have previously stated that vessels operating outside the approved routes would bear responsibility for any resulting incidents.

The latest incident comes amid renewed tensions between Iran and the United States over control and security in the Strait of Hormuz. On July 8, U.S. President Donald Trump announced that the ceasefire outlined in a memorandum of understanding (MoU) signed between Washington and Tehran the previous month was no longer in effect.

Since then, both countries have exchanged military strikes, disrupting commercial shipping through the Strait of Hormuz and heightening concerns over global energy security.
Separately, Iran’s Health Ministry, citing figures reported by Mehr News Agency, said a recent wave of U.S. airstrikes killed 59 people and injured 592 others. The ministry also said that an earlier phase of U.S. attacks between February 28 and April 10 resulted in 3,375 deaths and left 118 medical workers injured, while 26 healthcare personnel were killed.

The reported tanker explosion is expected to add further uncertainty to regional maritime security and international oil markets.
