Multiple outlets, including Sky News and Marca, have confirmed the devastating news.The 28-year-old footballer was coming off a triumphant season, having won both the English Premier League with Liverpool and the UEFA Nations League with Portugal. Jota was on holiday celebrating his successes when tragedy struck.According to reports from Spanish news agency EFE via Sky Sports, Jota was driving with his brother, André Jota, on Thursday night when their car lost control on the A-52 highway near Palacios de Sanabria, Zamora province. At approximately 12:40 a.m. local time, their Lamborghini veered off the road after a suspected tire burst while overtaking another vehicle, crashing and immediately catching fire. Both Diogo and André died at the scene.The accident has sent shockwaves through the footballing world. Just ten days prior, Jota had married his longtime partner, Ruth Cardoso. The couple shared three children, and photos from their recent wedding were still circulating online when news of the tragedy broke. André, 26, was also a professional footballer, playing for a second-division club in Portugal.Spanish newspaper AS detailed that the vehicle burst into flames moments after the crash, leaving no chance of survival for the brothers.Jota joined Liverpool from Wolverhampton Wanderers in 2020 for 41 million euros. He played 182 matches for the Reds, scoring 65 goals. This past season, he netted six times while helping new manager Arne Slot’s side secure the Premier League title, though he often featured as a substitute. During his time at Anfield, Jota won the Premier League, FA Cup, Community Shield, and two Carabao Cups.
