Dhaka, June 8, 2025 — The Voice News
Bangladesh’s interim government on Saturday dismissed reports that British MP Tulip Siddiq had sent a formal request to meet Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus during his upcoming London visit.
Shafiqul Alam, Press Secretary to Chief Adviser Yunus, told The Voice News that no such letter has been received by the Chief Adviser’s Office or through official diplomatic channels.
“We have seen media reports claiming that Honorable British MP Tulip Siddiq has written a letter seeking a meeting with the Chief Adviser. As of now, we confirm that no such letter has been received either at the Chief Adviser’s Secretariat or through the Bangladesh High Commission in London,” Alam stated.
The clarification comes amid a wave of media coverage in the UK and Bangladesh, reporting that Siddiq — a four-term MP and daughter of Sheikh Rehana — had challenged Yunus to a face-to-face discussion regarding alleged corruption accusations made against her by the interim Bangladesh government.
Siddiq’s office in London maintains that a formal letter was sent to Yunus’ team, requesting a meeting during his planned June 10–13 visit to the UK.
The exchange has added fresh controversy to Yunus’ London trip, where he is set to receive the Harmony Award 2025 from King Charles and engage in high-level discussions on governance reforms and economic cooperation.
Sources close to Yunus say the Chief Adviser remains focused on his official program and will not be drawn into political distractions.
However, the situation is being closely watched by diplomatic observers, as a public meeting — or the refusal of one — could have wider implications for UK-Bangladesh relations and the image of Yunus’ embattled interim administration.
